I visited Japan in 2023 and it absolutely lives up to the hype. Before going, I knew Japan had a reputation for being clean and organized, but to experience it in real life was truly shocking. I grew up in San Francisco. I'm used to seeing homeless people, poop on the sidewalks, and occasionally a homeless person in the act of pooping on the sidewalk. I didn't see any of that in Japan. I visited Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Nagasaki. These are very popular areas for tourists and yet somehow the people of Japan are able to keep things running smoothly. Contrast that with the flagship cities in the United States: San Francisco, New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, etc. The amount of filth, crime, and incompetence in these cities is orders of magnitude greater than in Japan. If you are a Japanese tourist in America, good luck and my sincere condolences.
